![]() ![]() Even plugging in a hard drive and trying to tether on a laptop has caused issues. What I have had issues with is the under powering of USB ports and the USB 3 spec needing very specific and consistent amounts of power. This will also show the connection speed of the connected device which can help to diagnose any file transfer slowdown issues.Ĭards in cameras have definitely been blamed for issues and it certainly adds one more potential problem -however, I’ve had virtually no issues tethering with them in/ out on dozens of cameras across multiple versions of C1. These typically have fully powered USB ports that are marked as high speed or high power because they are independently powered to give the usb 3 the full and constant power it needs.Īn additional way to see what is connected is by going to the System Report and seeing what is showing up under the USB tab. I would try borrowing/ testing a thunderbolt hub that’s externally powered like one from OWC, Caldigit, etc (I believe they are discontinued now that USB-C is the norm but you should be able to find one like it or the same model). When the camera is connected you might have some transfer speed issues with USB 2 but since it requires less power it’s more stable.įrom your info, it sounds like the only port you haven’t tested is the Thunderbolt 2 port. Sounds like an issue with the computer and the USB 3 ports. I definitely can’t afford a new laptop right now, so is my solution to get a good, powerful USB hub? Please can someone help me understand how a cheap USB 2.0 USB hub is assisting in making this work? As opposed to the very-expensive Tether Boos Pro which is not working AT ALL!? Software is not a factor (Sofortbild did what CaptureOne did) Memory card is definitely a factor (although I have definitely shot tethered with a memory card in the past, but will take it out in future)Ĭable is not a factor (tried cables other then Tethertools and it didn’t matter) USB ports are definitely a factor (left and right ports are the same) Tried my old iMac (2011) with USB2.0 and everything worked perfectly! No need for a USB hub. Using USB hub with Tether Boost Pro - didn’t work Using a 4 Port 2.0 USB Hub with Tethertool cable = with memory card - didn’t work without memory card - DID WORK (Capture One and Sofortbild saw the camera!) Tried Tether Boost Pro (with AC power adaptor and without), into Mac USB ports - didn’t work With memory card out, Tethertool cable into Mac USB ports (3.0) - didn’t work (no sign of camera picking up on CaptureOne)ĭownloaded software “Sofortbild” (free OSx tether software) - it reflected exactly what CaptureOne showed when it did and didn’t work (so I am ruling out software) Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and advice!! I can’t afford to buy a new camera or new laptop. This is really jeopardising my work and I just don’t know what to do. At the moment, nothing is coming up at all. In Capture One, there have been times when the camera is read (the battery icon comes up) but it then disappears immediately. I have been unable to try my D800 with another computer using Capture One. I have tried to use a Nikon D850 and it also has connectivity issues I have explained the problem to Nikon and they can’t tell me why this is happening. (And I don’t have a problem with the ports for anything else) I have sent my MacBook to a technician to check if the USB ports are faulty - he said they were fine. I have updated to Capture One 20 and to Mac OSX Catalina, to no avail. Replaced the TOGO PCB (usb input) as I thought maybe it was faulty, but the problem persists (over ZAR5000 later!!)īought new tether cables, sent them back to supplier to check them and they said they were fine and have tried non-tether tool usb cables, but the problem has persisted. I always shoot tethered and most of the time it works just fine, but it goes through periods where the computer just doesn’t pick up the camera. MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) - 2,3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 Tether Tools TetherPro USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Micro-B Cable Here is the hardware and software that I am using: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I have had a tethering issue that arises, on and off, for the last 2 years. I am a professional photographer, mostly shooting in studio, products and interiors. ![]()
